Why Bother?

I'm not much of a great cook. I know that. But I can still put a meal together that is edible by most starving humans. Except for my own kids and husband. I try to do my mom-ly duties and make good, nutritious dinners, but there is always someone who doesn't like the cheese. Or the mushrooms. Or the green beans. Fine. Just pick that stuff out and eat it anyway. But they won't. They just turn their little noses up to it and will eat bread for dinner.

There are a few dishes that everyone likes, but that is rare. So I tend to make those things as much as possible. And do my best to ignore the comments of, "This again?" or "I'm so tired of having this." and remember that they are at least eating something.

At least once a week, I try to do everyone a favor by making something new. Nothing disgusting mind you like caviar or liver. But just something that I haven't made before. Only to be greeted with faces that looked like they just smelled a week old dead fish.

It makes me feel so good.

So I am starting to think, "Why bother? If no one likes what I make, or cares if I don't, then I save myself the hassle and disappointment and not cook at all." Then I feel guilty for not making dinner for my poor hungry kids.

I wonder how many days in a row you can feed your kids macaroni and cheese before it's considered child abuse?

sorry your hard work is not being appreciated.

we had a rule when i was a kid-eat what is served or don't eat. I've tried to keep the same rule, although my kids are 1 and 3 so it's easy still. but when they are older, it's gonna be simple-eat it or go hungry. i'm not a short order cook.

***disclaimer-i would never actually let me kids starve.

I have the same problem. My kids are older (7, 10 and 11) but they don't like anything I cook. And my husband is no better- he'll pick through it and put all of the meat to one side, etc. Yet, all of them will eat at a restaurant where you have no idea if the meat, etc really is fresh. It drives me nuts. And I could care less about dinner myself. I used to like to cook. Not at all anymore.

My son (who was 13 at the time) said one day....I don't like it when you make 'recipes' ....referring to the fact that I liked to get onto the internet and find new things to cook. Perfect, lets just order pizza!

I have 4 things that I cook regularily (all involving chicken) and the rest of the time I try to put enuf side dishes out that they won't starve. I keep plenty of fruits, vegies, and various crackers and granola bars around so I'm fairly certain none of them is going to faint from lack of food....it's about all you can do.

and hey, I didn't eat onions until I was 30, so there's always hope:)

yeah, I used to try really hard to come up with creative meals but after slaving over a grand meal and having everyone turn their noses up at it - i quit. if there is something i want to eat i'll make it and make my girls something different (but usually i still get them to try it and sometimes they will come over to the 'dark side' and eat something i cooked). they don't like homemade as much as warm-'em-up chicken nuggets, mac-n-cheese, pizza, etc. they will eat vegetables (out of a can, warmed in microwave) and fruit without any issues...

i used to like to find recipes online to try out - but it's not worth it just for me.

my mom was in the eat-what-i-cook-no-matter-what camp and while i understand that point of view, i hated it as a kid - and consequently, i don't make my kids eat food they don't like...so yeah, they lack variety...
