Decisions, Decisions

We have a choice to make and I'm not quite sure what to do. My husband just finished a job and we just got paid and we could either:

  • 1) Be practical and save it (but where's the fun in that?);
  • 2) Buy a used 4-wheeler (a life-long dream of my husband's);
  • 3) Go on a cruise (which is something that I really want to do since our marriage is now on the mends and I want to start making new, good memories with him); or
  • 4) Put it towards our credit card bill and cut that in half (ugh, again with the practicality).

It's not a whole bunch of money, but it not something that comes around very often. I'm leaning toward the cruise, but that only lasts a week whereas the 4-wheeler could be used for years to come. I just like to go on trips and escape my doldrum life. I'm selfish like that. But both of those things are wants, not needs. Saving for later or paying off the credit card is a need. It just doesn't seem as fun. And I like fun. And being unpractical sounds nice when all I ever am is practical.

What Mike and I sometimes do with lump sums is use MOST of it to do something boring, but save out a LITTLE for something fun. So if we got, say, $5000, we might send $4500 to the mortgage or credit card or whatever, but then use $500 to buy a Wii and a Wii Fit and a Wii controller. That way we do something we know is right for the long run, but we also feel like we got to do something truly fun that would normally be too expensive to do---and that relieves the doldrums a little, too.

I'm with constance. Is there something less pricey that would be fun and umpractical? That you would both enjoy and would give you those new, good memories? And still have a chunk left to through at that credit card bill?

Yup, same sentiment from me, too. My grandmother sent us a bunch of money for Christmas, and even though DH and I are on a really strong debt-destroying track, we're using at least some of it for "fun" stuff. If you can call buying a new microwave fun. Or saving to buy new clothes fun.

My advice would be to use most of it to pay down that credit card, and then use the rest for a nice evening out: dinner, babysitter, and time away from everyday life as a couple.
